Emily Putterman-Handler
Emily Putterman-Handler affectionately known in the industry as the guru of shoemaking has been performing her magic for over twenty years. She has taught the joy of shoemaking to many students through her time at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Hunter College and Pratt Institute .
Emily is a graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York where she studied footwear and accessory design. After graduating from FIT she attended the Footwear Design Studies Program at Cordwainers Technical College, London, England. Emily also studied jewelry design at Parsons School of Design, New York.
Emily's students have come from all walks of life from physicians, hedge fund managers and design students. Many have started successful careers as shoe manufacturers and designers for companies such as Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden and Coach. KStar Shoes and Kristina Kozak shoes are just two successful lines whose creators first felt their creative spark under the tutelage of Emily. She is also a board member of GreenSoul Footwear, a shoe company that was formed by two of her former students.
Emily is a recipient of the following awards: Capezio Design Award, Pony Sneaker Design Award, Reebok Design Award, Ann Albrizio Commencement Award and was elected a life member of the Art Students League, New York.
Sheba and Urinetown are just two of the theatrical productions that Emily has designed shoe wardrobes for.
It was also under Emily's guidance that the shoes in the movie P.S. I Love You were created by a student.
Emily's courses are an introduction to a wonderful new world of exciting possibilities.
Kimberly Ayoung is an adjunct professor of business who was drawn to Emily's shoemaking course because of her love of shoes. Her friends call her "Imelda", which of course comes from Imelda Marcos who is well known for her fondness of shoes. Kim first took Emily's beginning course in shoemaking and immediately became hooked. It is now Kim's intent to create and manufacture her own line of shoes.
Emily and Kim formed a bond originally based on their positions as professors at the local universities. Then they realized that a shoemaking teacher and a business professor were a perfect duo to help others be creative through the art of shoemaking, Thus, The Cobblettes was formed.
